Hackney Fact: crime is falling faster in Hackney than in any other London borough, with gun crime down by 35% last year.

The Safer Cleaner Partnership aims to ensure that Hackney is a place where people feel safe in their homes and can walk the streets, day or night, without fear of intimidation or harassment, and can enjoy living in a safe, clean and green borough.

The partnership has identified the following local priorities:

  • · Reducing violent crime and criminal gang culture
  • · Reducing anti-social behaviour and the fear of crime
  • · Reducing drug and alcohol misuse and related crime
  • · Improving liveability and reducing environmental crime
  • · Reducing property crime such as street robberies and burglaries

The co-chairs of the Safer Cleaner Partnership are Tim Shields, Chief Executive, London Borough of Hackney, and Steve Dann, Borough Commander, Hackney Police.

The Safer Cleaner Partnership is the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP)* in Hackney and is responsible for achievement of the safer, cleaner outcomes set out in Hackney’s Community Strategy and Local Area Agreement

The partnership includes statutory bodies such as Hackney Council, Hackney Police, City & Hackney Primary Care Trust, the Learning Trust, and the London Fire Brigade and also selected representatives of the community and voluntary sector.

The partnership comprises a decision making strategic board, five strategic sub groups each dealing with a particular theme and a performance co-ordinating group. It forms an important part of the family of Team Hackney partnerships and has formal links to the Better Homes and Children and Young People Partnerships. The partnership is also supported by a range of operational groups which feed into the relevant strategic sub groups.

The Team Hackney Adviser for the Safer Cleaner Partnership is Jason Davis, who can be reached on 020 8356 3282, jason.davis@hackney.gov.uk for more information.

In May 2006 Team Hackney approved a Guns & Gangs Floor Target Action Plan; and criminal gang behaviour has subsequently also been identified as a key priority for the Local Area Agreement (LAA). Three interventions were commissioned in 2006 as pilot activities:

  • Mobile Gang Intervention Team (led by the Hackney Youth Offending Team)
  • Operation Stabiliser (led by the Metropolitan Police Service)
  • Youth Futures (led by the Hackney Council for Voluntary Services)

A second phase of commissioning was approved in July 2007, and this work programme will be subject to a separate evaluation in 2008.
