What is Beacon?

The Beacon awards recognise local government’s excellence and innovation in improving the quality of life for their residents and communities. The most recent Beacon councils were announced by the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) on 3 March 2009 and Hackney was among the winners.

Why is Hackney a Beacon?

Hackney’s won its Beacon status for the development of its Strategic Commissioning Framework which uses good working relationships with partners to deliver innovative and continually improving services which measurably benefit local people.  Jules Pipe, Mayor of Hackney and Chair of Team Hackney commented at the time:  “Hackney’s Beacon status is unique acknowledgement for the whole community as the awards also recognise the work of the council’s partners, such as the police, health services, local schools and colleges, local business, and the community and voluntary sector”.

What’s new!

Third Sector Commissioning Development workshop- Tomlinson Centre- Thursday 24th February 2010

Thank you to all the organisations that participated in the The Third Sector Commissioning Development workshop. The event was well received and attracted 40 delegates who helped to co-author the draft Strategy.  Pictures from the event will be up on this site shortly and delegates from over twenty local Third Sector organisations (along with local commissioners and statutory partners) contributed towards creating a common third sector approach to commissioning.  Watch this space for more details on the progress of the Strategy and in the meantime please click below to see presentations from our speakers on the day.

Online Conference: 16-20 November

Hackney and our other Beacon partner from Devon, Wakefield and Westminster ran a week long online conference on strategic commissioning.  Each day had a theme and Hackneys day was on how to mainstream change.  All the conference materials are still available to members of the IDeA Communities Of Practice website (to become a member see the Links to partners tab below, and watch this space for up and coming events in the New Year!
