Hackney Facts

Hackney is a truly global borough, home to more than 207,000 people from six continents and a wide range of ethnic backgrounds. More than 100 languages are spoken in the borough.  Its population is relatively young when compared with other boroughs, and is increasing.  It rose by 13% between 1981 and 2001.

It is a borough of huge contrasts, bordered by the City of London, Tower Hamlets, Islington, Haringey and Newham.  It will be served by London’s tube network for the first time in 2010 when the East London Line Extension connects Whitechapel with Dalston Junction.  Almost one third of the 2012 Olympic/Paralympic Games site is in Hackney and last year, London’s only Olympic-sized heated outdoor poor was opened in London Fields.

These facts show that Hackney is an improving borough.

  • In the last five years Hackney Schools' GCSE results have improved by 23% - twice as much as the national improvement of 11.7%.
  • Crime is falling faster in Hackney than in any other London borough, with gun crime down by 35% last year.
  • Three quarters of residents say that Hackney is a place where people from different backgrounds get on well together.
  • Hackney has one of the highest levels of low cost home ownership in London.
  • The decline in teenage pregnancy in Hackney is among the best in the country.  Its reduction in teenage pregnancy rates of 28% since 1998 is more than double the national average reduction of 11%.
  • With 62 parks and open spaces, Hackney has more green open spaces than any other inner London borough – four parks have recently been accorded green-star status.
  • Hackney is an entrepreneurial borough - between 1999 and 2004 the borough had London’s second highest level of growth in VAT registered businesses.
