Hackney Facts

Hackney is a truly global borough, home to more than 207,000 people from six continents and a wide range of ethnic backgrounds. More than 100 languages are spoken in the borough.  Its population is relatively young when compared with other boroughs, and is increasing.  It rose by 13% between 1981 and 2001.

It is a borough of huge contrasts, bordered by the City of London, Tower Hamlets, Islington, Haringey and Newham.  It joined London's tube network when the London Overground was connected to Whitechapel via Dalston Junction in May 2010.  A further connection with Highbury & Islington will take place early in 2011.  Almost one third of the 2012 Olympic/Paralympic Games site is in Hackney and London’s only Olympic-sized heated outdoor pool is situated in one of Hackney's green flag parks, London Fields.  Hackney has a total of  62 parks and open spaces, more than any other London borough, of which 12 have been awarded Green Flags.

  • In 2009/10, Hackney schools were the country’s most improved at GCSE, with results climbing above the national average for the first time in the borough’s history. That success was mirrored at post-16, with Hackney ranked as the country’s second most improved authority per student and the third most improved per subject studied.
  • Hackney's employment rate rose 0.8% in the last quarter and is now above the London average.
  • The proportion of the population on out of work benefits fell slightly, although it is still the highest in London
  • There was a further fall in overall recorded crime rates for 2009/10 and crime in the borough is now lower than at any time during the past 10 years.
  • Teenage pregnancy rates in Hackney have fallen by 26% since 1998.
