What is Hackney Community Engagement Board?

The Community Engagement Board, established in early 2008, is funded by the Metropolitan Police Authority to inform community members about local crime and community safety issues and to help them to monitor and influence the types of activities undertaken and inform future priorities.

The aims of Hackney Community Engagement Board are:

  • To support local community engagement to help secure effective, citizen-focused, fair, accountable and responsive policing and council community engagement activity for Hackney’s communities.

  • To provide a forum in which local people can engage Hackney Police, Hackney Council, the Metropolitan Police Authority and each other in constructive discussion and debate about policing, crime and community engagement issues in Hackney.

  • To enable people in Hackney to understand, inform, influence, support or challenge policing and community engagement policies that affect them.

  • To provide a forum for information flow in all directions between Hackney’s police, local authority, partnerships and the local community.

  • To be an inclusive body which promotes equal opportunities and diversity, treats all people with respect, will not compromise its impartiality, and will not tolerate discrimination in any form.

Board members:

The Hackney Community Engagement Board had its AGM for 2009/10 on May 19th at Morley Hall on Mare Street. This meeting saw the election of a new executive for 2010/11.

The executive now comprises of Sheila Suso-Runge, who was Treasurer of the Board for the previous year, as Chair; Rhasan Brunner, the Board’s link to the Youth Parliament who takes a lead on youth engagement, was re-elected as Vice-Chair; the Board also welcomes Vivian Ashton, CAP Chair for Queensbridge Ward, who was also elected as a Vice-Chair. Due to Sheila’s election as Chair and a lack of other candidates a Treasurer was not elected, the Executive will consider this when they meet to look for suitable candidates for the role.’

Public Meetings:

The Board’s quarterly public meetings provide a forum for local police to report back to the community on local policing tactics and initiatives.  It allows the community to raise probing questions with the Police and Council on policing and community safety issues.  Previous meetings have energetically addressed topics such as Young People and Crime, Serious Violent Crime and Volunteering.
